For international travel from the U.S.A., you are required to have a passport. Do not wait less than 6 weeks before your trip overseas to apply for a passport otherwise you might not receive it in time.
Here are the steps to apply for a U.S.A. passport:
WHERE TO GO
The first thing you need to do is to find the nearest passport acceptance facility. You can find the facility closest to your home using the following website:
You just need to enter your zip code and the website will provide the nearest location for you to apply at.
You must apply in person for any of the following reasons:
- The passport is your first passport
- You lost your previous passport
- Your previous passport is older than 15 years old
- The passport is for a child under 16 years old
WHAT YOU NEED
You need to bring the proper documentation to the facility in order to successfully apply for a new U.S.A. passport. You need the DS-11 form and proof of U.S. citizenship. Proof includes a birth certificate or naturalization certificate.
You also need a government-issued photo ID. A driver’s license is the most common form of photo ID accepted for passport applications.
You also need to bring a headshot photo. You can get a photo from a nearby Walgreens or a local photographer. You cannot use a personal photo or photo from your smartphone.
You also need to bring a check for the proper amount. You should leave the check blank and the facility will let you know the cost for your state.
For a child, you must provide proof of your relationship with the child and both parents must be present. If both parents cannot be present, the absent parents must provide written consent for the child.
The passport should arrive at your home in 4-6 weeks after the application is submitted. You can request an expedited delivery in case of an emergency but otherwise we recommend you apply as far ahead of your international travel date as possible.
Once your passport arrives, you have your personal invite to travel the world!
