Travel in the Faroe Islands

Airport transport
All arriving and departing flights are serviced by scheduled bus service. It is best to purchase the pass upon arrival at the airport.

Busses and Ferries
A well-developed, national system of roadways and ferries
connects most towns and villages in the Faroe Islands. The inter-town bus and ferry system is operated by the government-owned national transportation company, Strandfaraskip Landsins. This inter-town buses (the buses are blue) operate daily to most areas. A comprehensive schedule listing the various timetables for the inter-town buses and ferries may be purchased from the tourist offices, as well as the central bus station near the harbor in Tórshavn. Discounts off the normal fares are available for children, pensioners, students and visitors. The capital, Tórshavn, offers an efficient local bus service (Bussleiðin) with routes that reach most areas of the town. The red-colored busses operate every half-hour during the day and hourly in the evening. Route maps and schedules may be obtained on the buses, at Kiosk Steinatún in the center of town, at Kunningarstovan, the Tórshavn tourist office, or at the city help center located in the post office in Tórshavn. Ask about the "clip-kort", which provide ten rides for the price of eight!!

Car Rental
Car rental services are provided by MB-Tours, our local tour operator and the exclusive agent in the Faroe Islands for Europcar, one of the world's leading car rental companies. All vehicles are new and well-maintained by experienced mechanics. You car can be picked up at the airport or if you desire delivered to you at your hotel in the capital, Tórshavn.

Class A: Ford Fiesta or similar, 5-door hatchback, 4 persons. This is a small car with manual transmission. Free mileage and full Collision Damage Waiver and theft insurance included.
Class B: Honda Civic or similar, 5-door sedan, 5 persons. Manual transmission. Free mileage and full Collision Damage Waiver and theft insurance included.
Class C: eugeot 307 or similar, 4-door station wagon, 5 persons. Manual transmission. Free mileage and full Collision Damage Waiver and theft insurance included.
For 4-wheel drive SUV's, cars with automatic transmission or pick-up/drop-off options at Vágar Airport, contact FST for specific pricing and conditions.

Car Rental Conditions:

The driver(s) must be 20 years or older.
The driver(s) must have a valid US state-issued driver's license.
Off-road driving is strictly forbidden.
Automatic transmission vehicles are available but not plentiful, usually come in one or two model types only and generally are more expensive.
Minimum one-day rental.
Prices include:

Car pick-up and drop-off at the Vágar Airport or at a hotel in Tórshavn

Separate charges may be levied for additional drivers, refueling, after hours return and delivery and one-way rentals. Please ask us.

Driving in the Faroe Islands

Right hand drive - just like in the United States. Speedometers show km/hr.
Maximum speed of 80 km/hrs.
In towns, 55 km/hrs down to 30 km/hrs, depending on the neighborhood.
Driver and all passengers are required by law to use seat belts at all times.
Turn off your cell phones. It's illegal to talk and drive at the same time.
As in the United States, driving under the influence of alcohol is forbidden.
Headlights should be used all the times, especially in the tunnels and, of course, at night or other low light conditions.
Most all roads in the Faroe Islands are well paved with asphalt.
Off-roading is strictly forbidden. Don't even think about it.
Gas stations are plentiful in Tórshavn and are spread throughout the country, usually at major intersections. Most are open seven days a week and many until 11:00 pm. Self serve pumps are available. Octane levels are 95 for regular unleaded and 98 for premium unleaded.

Hotels
HOTEL HAFNIA
Four-star hotel situated in the center of Tórshavn within walking distance of the harbor and the historical part of the town. The roof terrace affords a unique panoramic view over the whole town. 57 rooms, all with shower and toilet, telephone, hairdryer, radio, TV and mini-bar. Restaurant, lounge and sauna.

HOTEL TÓRSHAVN
Three-star hotel centrally located near the harbor in Tórshavn. The corner rooms have a beautiful view over the harbor and the local fishing boats. 41 rooms, all with shower and toilet, telephone, TV and pants press. Restaurant and a pizza café. No alcoholic beverages served.

HOTEL FØROYAR
Four-star hotel situated above the capital on the outskirts of Tórshavn. All the rooms have a panoramic view over the capital. 108 rooms, all with shower and toilet, telephone, radio, TV, hair dryer, pants press and mini-bar. Restaurant affords a dramatic view over the town; lounge.

HOTEL STREYM
Tourist class accommodations located several blocks from downtown near the water. All 14 rooms have private bathrooms with floor heating, work area, arm chair, telephone, satellite TV. Internet Access is available and this is a non-smoking hotel.

HOTEL VÁGAR
Three-star hotel in the village of Sørvágur on the island of Vágar right next to the international airport. 25 rooms, all with shower and toilet, telephone, mini-bar, radio and TV. Restaurant, billiards room, solarium and TV lounge.

HOTEL NORÐ
Two-star hotel in the village of Viðareiði on the island of Viðoy. 15 rooms, all with shower and toilet. Restaurant, bar, billiards and TV lounge.

HOTEL RUNAVÍK
Two-star hotel situated in the center of Runavík on Eysturoy. 24 rooms, all with shower and toilet, TV and pants press. Restaurant and TV lounge. No alcoholic beverages served.

HOTEL EIÐI
Two-star hotel in the village of Eiði on Eysturoy. 17 rooms, all with shower, telephone, radio, TV and mini-bar. Some rooms have private toilets. Restaurant and TV room.

Hotel KLAKSVÍK
Two-star hotel situated in the western part of Klaksvík. 28 rooms, some with shower and toilet. Restaurant and TV lounge

Guesthouses
SKANSIN
Two-star guesthouse well situated in Tórshavn, only a three minute walk to the harbor and ferry / bus terminal, and a six minute walk to the city center. The guesthouse offers a beautiful view out over the fjord. 11 rooms, all with TV, refrigerator and washbasin; toilets and bathrooms near each room.

UNDIR FJALLI
Two-star guesthouse situated in the southwestern part of Tórshavn. 36 rooms, all with shower and toilet. Kitchen, TV, parking facilities, telephone, laundry, good bus connection to town center.

Youth hostel
BLÁDÝPI
Local guesthouse situated near the center of Tórshavn. 12 rooms. Toilets and showers near each room. A kitchen is available for guests.

Apartments
There are many comfortable apartments, usually in private homes, available for families or visitors wishing to stay for extended periods. If this is what you need, please ask us, as the location, size and prices vary.

Vacation Homes
These exclusive homes are scattered throughout the country and afford an excellent way to visit the Faroe Islands. There are many to chose from and the standards vary, from a small, sod-roofed summer house deep in a valley, to modern, well-equipped ranch homes with all the creature comforts. Classic Bed & Breakfasts
While there are a few to choose from, the Faroe Islands is not overwhelmed with these traditional getaways. That said, they are the perfect way to come in contact with the local Faroese. Most are modest accommodations, yet the breakfast conversation is guaranteed to be delightful.

Glasstovan *** - Hotel Føroyar. Has a fantastic view over the capital. Good à la carte menu. Has a very good traditional Faroese buffet every Tuesday evening in the summer.
Marco Polo ** - Center of Tórshavn. Traditional steakhouse. Lunch buffet every day. Features puffin on the menu.
Merlot ** - Center of Tórshavn. Very good fish menu.
Perlan * - Located in the SMS shopping center.
Restaurant Hafnia *** - Hotel Hafnia. Lunch buffet every day. Good à la carte menu. Has a very good fish buffet every Tuesday and Thursday evening in the summer.
Rio Bravo ** - Center of Tórshavn. Traditional steakhouse.

Night Clubs and Bars

Café Natur - Café/bar. By the harbor. Open every day. Light meals available.
Cleopatra - Café/bar. Open every evening.
Club 20 - Disco in the center of Tórshavn. Popular with young people. Open Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Klubbin - Oldest "Beer Club" in the Danish kingdom, dating back to 1882.
Kaggin - Pub near the center of Tórshavn. Open Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Live dance music every Saturday.
Platform - Disco in the center of Tórshavn. Open Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Popular with the young crowd.
